![]() ![]() fewer glitches and more even/predictable behavior. ![]() Sort of like turning JRiver into the squeaky wheel from the device point of view - the things that gets the most attention.īut obviously there are advantages, at least theoretically, to larger buffer sizes. So anyone know why this would be ? (smaller buffer sizes best with no exclusive access, and larger with exclusive access) I'm wondering if smaller buffer sizes force the JRiver process to more frequently access the device and if that somehow improves things in the case that JRiver doesn't have exlusive access. I was hoping that "play file with memory" would now improve things, but in fact it still sounds worse. I still want to be a little conservative and not get too far from recommended settings. I left prebuffering and latency at their defaults, however. I'm now using the max software buffer and max power-of-2 hardware buffer. At this point the buffer settings now sounded best at larger sizes. Then I checked the box to open the device with exclusive access. The sound was more extended, faster, and lighter on its feet with the smallest buffer sizes.Īlso, checking "play file from memory" made things sound congested. I changed buffer settings in several places (software buffer, hardware buffer, pre-buffering, and latency) and in general the smaller the buffer, the better it sounded. ![]() Here is what happened.Īt first, I did NOT check the box that says "open device with exclusive access". I'm also playing with buffer settings in JRiver. This sounds much better than my CD transport/DAC, and now I can do hi-res formats too. But in any case I've noticed that stopping unnecessary programs, particularly the browser (Chrome), helps a lot.īut I do love it very much. My MacBook is for general use, unfortunately, so I can't turn it into an optimized music server. (I don't know much about electronics, but I know a guy who did the work for me.) I'm using a custom modified iFi iDSD Nano as the DAC, with a custom 5V linear power supply injecting into a custom USB cable. I'm more experienced with CD and vinyl than with computer audio, but I'm now using JRiver Media Center on a MacBook Pro. ![]()
