It meant everybody had access to the same content, and the people funding it didn't get access to anything that gave them an in-game advantage.Īctivision-Blizzard have indulged in some horribly greedy and anti-consumer practices, but Overwatch 1's basic business model isn't one of them. Lootboxes have no place in most games that release at full price, but for Overwatch 1, it made perfect sense. Charging for that content directly would have hurt the game, as there would either need to be separate servers for people depending on which DLC they had access to, or everybody would be able to play together, but some people wouldn't have access to certain characters, which would ruin the experience even for people who DID own the DLC (your team would be gimped if somebody can't play as certain characters). There's no way all of that content would ever have been added without revenue. Characters, maps, gameplay modes, events, etc. That was offset by all post-launch gameplay content being absolutely free.
